Kerala

Onam: Perhaps the most widely used, in addition to one of the oldest festivals in India, Onam, signifies the celebration of the harvest. Legend has it that king Mahabali who had been a demon had won the heart from the Gods together with his selflessness and he visits Kerala for 10 days each year - during the Ten days of Onam. Marked with exciting snake boat races at Kottayam, Onam is well known with sweet porridge (payasam) and flower decorations.

Pongal: Another riotous harvest festival that marks the beginning of spring and also the end of winter, people dress yourself in new and colorful saris and visit the temples. Additionally, sweet and savory rice dishes are cooked to celebrate the bounty of a good harvest.

Boat racing at Arunmala: This really is a classic sight to behold and no tourist must miss the wedding on his South India tour package. Several boats compete with one another - but with all of them crossing the finishing line simultaneously. It is indeed a goody to stand and cheer the boatmen as a hundred oarsmen steer each long tapered boat having a curved tail.

Tamil Nadu

Deepavali: This lovely festival of fireworks, lamps and glittering saris makes all South India tour packages worth their salt. Rows of brightly lit lamps and colorful rangolis (rangolis are designs on the ground) mark the celebration of Deepavali. Enticing aromas of delicacies waft in the air to whet your appetite.

Natyanjali dance festival: Enjoy the joy of dance using the Natyanjali festival celebrated within the ancient Nataraja temple at Chidambaram. The Natyanjali festival weaves its potent charm on viewers because it unfolds inside the hallowed walls of the ancient temple dedicated to the cosmic dancer, Lord Shiva. Dancers from all areas of India congregate here to do their very own niche dances.
